Ex-Governor of Jakarta Anies Baswedan responded positively to the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS)'s official nomination of him as a prospective gubernatorial candidate for the 2024 Jakarta Pilkada.

This decision is driven by his commitment to provide a fresh option, presenting a new perspective and background to the Banten community, outside the long-standing dominant dynasty in the region. Arief Wismansyah’s leadership in Tangerang has been noted for innovation in city management and inclusive infrastructure development, creating a firm groundwork to advance the province of Banten. In this context, he is dedicated to promoting social equity, long-term development, and fair development throughout Banten. Arief conveyed his willingness to face the challenges of the Banten election with a vision aimed at positive progress and progress for all segments of society. He disclosed that his decision to run was initially unintended, but the motivation from the community and his family made him reevaluate. He mentioned that a meeting with VP Ma’ruf Amin significantly affected his decision to run. “I was asked by Mr. Ma’ruf Amin, and we had a meeting. He questioned, are you really running, Mr. Arief? If you want to run, you have to win; if you’re not sure you can win, don’t run, he said. I believed he was correct. Eventually, on Monday afternoon, I decided to run,” Arief said when met in the Karawaci area of Tangerang City, Sunday (23/06/2024). Arief also shared his views on the ruling political family in Banten, noting the division in the community related to this dominance. Nevertheless, he is hopeful about contending with famous candidates in the region. “I hope to work together with the Banten citizens to develop jointly, including with the existing dynasties,” he added. Arief stressed his preparedness to cooperate with various parties for the progress of Banten, without compromising the interests of the people. “Whatever the outcome, I hope the next leadership can offer the best for Banten,” he concluded. “As the winning party in Jakarta, PKS has decided to fight for its best cadre as the candidate for Governor of Jakarta. The candidate we are proposing is Mohamad Sohibul Iman, who currently serves as the Deputy Chair of the PKS Syuro Council,” stated Mabruri in his statement on Sunday. Mabruri added that Sohibul Iman is a figure with considerable capacity. Sohibul Iman led PKS during the 2015-2020 period. “This means he has proven leadership in elevating PKS. PKS President Ahmad Syaikhu explained the reasons for endorsing Anies and Sohibul Iman for the 2024 Jakarta gubernatorial election. Anies Baswedan is considered a figure who made significant progress while leading DKI Jakarta. According to Syaikhu, Anies’s performance has made happiness to the residents of Jakarta. “Mr. Anies Rasyid Baswedan excelled as governor during the 2017-2022 period with various achievements in different sectors of development, improving the city and bringing happiness to its residents,” stated Syaikhu at the Party Leadership School Opening at Grand Sahid Jaya Hotel, Central Jakarta, on June 25, 2024. Meanwhile, Sohibul Iman, according to Syaikhu, is a scholar. He mentioned that Sohibul also has an impressive track record in government. “Mr. Sohibul Iman is a technocrat and a scholar who has served as the rector of Paramadina University. He has served in the legislature as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) from 2013-2014 and has been PKS President from 2015-2020,” explained Syaikhu. Syaikhu stated that PKS is a cadre party with the mandate to conduct cadre and leadership regeneration. Therefore, he said, in the 2024 simultaneous Pilkada, the party will nominate its cadres as candidates for regional heads. “Especially in areas where PKS is the winning party or has a majority of seats in the DPRD.
